PROCLAMATION
Monteseel forms part of an important network of protected areas within eThekwini that ensures that conservation worthy land is managed and protected. Monteseel, like all acquired conservation worthy land, fall within the Durban Metropolitan Open Space System (D’MOSS) and is considered important for meeting the Municipality’s sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services provision, and climate protection obligations and objectives.
The site is in the process of being proclaimed according to the National Environment Management: Protected Areas Act (No.57 of 2003), targeting the Nature Reserve status. The official proclamation of conservation areas is important for the following reasons:
- It gives an additional layer of protection to secure biodiversity and ensure that the land use status is secured in a long-term.
- To contribute national conservation estate.
