ROADS

The dirt roads that border the grassland  present an ongoing problem for the Monteseel Conservancy and the EPCPD department of the municipality who manages the conservation land around Monteseel. There is a gravel surface on the roads and every time the roads are graded the gravel is loosened. When it rains this loose gravel is washed onto the grassland swamping the plants and changing the nature of the soil. This gravel also washes into the storm water drains which in some cases also lead onto the grassland, or it blocks up the drains causing wash away in other places. This is a very unique problem because there are probably no other areas in the Ethekwini Municipality where roads boarder on to a grassland or other conservation area. We are trying to get a meeting between the Municipal Roads Department and the Storm Water Department to develop a solution to this problem.
